Cuts to bus services through Hockley
Dec 2008
A meeting held on a cold night in Hockley attracted over 100 angry passengers to make their views felt with Arriva management over proposed bus cuts.
Services 7 and 8 will be reduced to one an hour through Hockley. The other services from Southend will terminate at Ashingdon Schools, just a mile or two short of Hockley railway station and town centre.
This will lead to overcrowding at times and as many of the passengers are elderly will make the journey very inconvenient.
It was standing room only at the meeting on Tuesday night.
Malcolm Spalding, commercial manager for Arriva gave the reasons for the cuts and explained that low passenger numbers made it uneconomic to continue the existing service.
Points made from the audience were that it would be very inconvenient to get to Southend hospital at the correct time for appointments, that most passengers could not walk from Ashingdon Schools and that it would be more difficult to get to Hockley station at the right time for connections.
It was suggested that one of the services stopping at Ashingdon Schools could be extended to Hockley Spa or station. This would reduce the service through Ashingdon but would not need more buses or drivers.
Mr Spalding said that Arriva would consider the comments made and would look at the possibility of making some adjustments. This would be done the week ending 13th Dec in time for the new timetable to be printed.
